What Is It and How Do I Heal It Naturally?

Leaky gut, also known as intestinal permeability, is a condition that occurs when the lining of the gut becomes damaged and allows toxins, undigested food particles, and other harmful substances to leak into the bloodstream. This can lead to a wide range of health problems, from digestive issues and food sensitivities to autoimmune diseases and chronic inflammation.

So, How Does Leaky Gut Occur?

There are several factors that can contribute to this condition, including a diet high in processed foods and sugar, chronic stress, certain medications like antibiotics and NSAIDs, and imbalances in the gut microbiome.

Fortunately, there are many natural ways to heal leaky gut and restore gut health. Here are some strategies that I promote:

  1. Remove inflammatory foods from your diet: This includes processed foods, sugar, gluten, dairy, and other common food allergens. Focus on eating whole, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, healthy fats, and high-quality protein. Eat color - lots of it!
  2. Support digestive health: Taking digestive enzymes, probiotics, and other gut-supporting supplements can help improve digestion and reduce inflammation in the gut.
  3. Manage stress: Chronic stress can wreak havoc on the gut and contribute to leaky gut. Engage in stress-reducing activities like yoga, prayer, meditation, or deep breathing exercises.
  4. Address underlying health conditions: Certain health conditions, like autoimmune diseases and gut infections, can contribute to leaky gut. Addressing these conditions through functional medicine approaches can help to heal the gut and reduce symptoms.

By taking a holistic approach to healing leaky gut, you can improve your gut health, boost your immune system, and reduce your risk of chronic illness. If you are struggling with digestive issues or suspect you may have leaky gut, drop me an email and I can work with you to develop a personalized treatment plan that addresses the root causes of your symptoms.
